Role: ID Lead for Notebook packaging + Documentation

Designed by HP Design Team

Launched spring 2024

ABOUT

HP's new packaging design aims to create new unboxing experience, enhance sustainability, and establish a fresh packaging benchmark for HP.

The packaging design embodies simplicity, approachability, and a cohesive brand identity throughout HP's premium, mainstream, and entry level offerings.

PROCESS

The project started as designing for single product yet the scope quickly expanded to creating a whole new packaging system to accommodate HP’s large product offerings, including notebook, desktop, and all-in-ones.

The design objective was to deliver an unique OOBE experience while minimizing waste, reducing packaging components, and improve logistics. All packaging materials are derived from 100% sustainable sources. Deliberately chosen paper, pulp, and printing processes were designed to reduce weight, enhance recyclability, and uphold cost efficiency. The team worked firsthand with suppliers to ensure best design, quality and cost are executed.

OUTCOME

The final design presents a scalable and adaptable outer box that accommodates various pulp trays for different laptop models. Crafted with sustainability in mind, this package eliminates the need for additional protective materials, reducing waste and streamlining shipping. The graphic and labeling system is designed for flexibility, allowing customization for different sub-brands, while maintaining a cohesive HP brand identity. The artwork label serves a dual purpose, acting as both a seal and an easy-to-open perforated tear strip. Upon unboxing, the welcome page, which also functions as a top air cushion, can be personalized with messages or artwork, enhancing the unboxing experience.
